This lab is designed to help students understand some key phenomena exhibited by materials at the micro- and nanoscale. In this activity, students will create thin layers composed of sub-micron particles using the technique of drop casting. The lab explores issues that engineers and scientists face in working with thin film i.e., dealing with two phenomena that work against them: cracking and the coffee ring effect.
